Job Overview

The Cultural Heritage Documentation Specialist will lead efforts to catalog, digitize, and preserve Rwanda’s cultural heritage using advanced digital tools. This role bridges traditional practices with modern technology to ensure cultural assets are accessible for future generations. The position is based in Ruhengeri, a hub for cultural and ecological conservation in Rwanda.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct field research to document oral histories, traditional crafts, and indigenous knowledge systems.
  • Utilize 3D scanning, GIS mapping, and audio-visual tools to create digital archives of cultural artifacts.
  • Collaborate with local elders, artists, and community leaders to ensure ethical documentation practices.
  • Develop metadata standards and cataloging systems for digital heritage assets.
  • Organize workshops to train community members in digital preservation techniques.
  • Prepare reports and presentations for UNESCO stakeholders and funding bodies.

Required Skills

  • Proficiency in digital archiving software (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite, Archivists’ Toolkit).
  • Experience with ethnographic research methods and cultural sensitivity training.
  • Strong project management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines.
  • Fluency in Kinyarwanda and English.
  • Knowledge of UNESCO’s cultural preservation guidelines.
  • Ability to work in remote or rural field conditions.

Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Anthropology, Digital Archiving, Library Science, or related field.
  • Master’s Degree preferred but not required.

Experience

  • 3-5 years of experience in cultural documentation, museum curation, or heritage conservation.
  • Previous work in digital archiving or community-based research projects.

Salary

3,000,000 – 4,500,000 SSP per month, commensurate with experience.
