Job Overview
The Agricultural Data Scientist will join the Research & Development department to lead advanced analytics projects that optimize seed performance, soil health, and pest management across Rwanda’s diverse agro‑ecological zones. Working closely with agronomists, field technicians, and IT specialists, you will design predictive models, develop data pipelines, and translate complex datasets into clear recommendations for farmers and internal stakeholders. Key Responsibilities
- Collect, clean, and integrate heterogeneous agricultural data sources, including satellite imagery, IoT sensor feeds, and field trial results.
- Develop and validate machine‑learning models to predict crop yields, disease outbreaks, and optimal fertilizer application rates.
- Collaborate with agronomists to design experiments that generate high‑quality data for model training and validation.
- Create interactive dashboards and visualizations that communicate insights to farmers, extension officers, and senior management.
- Implement data governance standards to ensure data quality, security, and compliance with local regulations.
- Publish research findings in internal reports and external journals, enhancing Syngenta’s reputation as a thought leader in agricultural analytics.
- Support the development of digital tools and mobile applications that deliver real‑time recommendations to Rwanda’s farming community.
Required Skills
- Proficiency in Python or R for data analysis, with experience in libraries such as pandas, scikit‑learn, TensorFlow, or PyTorch.
- Strong understanding of statistical modeling, time‑series analysis, and geospatial analytics.
- Experience working with large‑scale datasets, including remote sensing imagery and sensor networks.
- Ability to translate technical results into clear, actionable recommendations for non‑technical audiences.
- Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud) and data pipeline tools (Airflow, Kafka, etc.).
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills, with a collaborative mindset.
Education
A Master’s degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Agricultural Engineering, Agronomy, or a related discipline is required. Candidates with a Ph.D. or additional certifications in machine learning, GIS, or precision agriculture will be given preference.
Experience
Applicants should have 3‑5 years of professional experience in data science, analytics, or research within the agricultural sector. Experience with field data collection, agronomic research, or working in emerging markets is highly valued.
Salary
