Job Overview
The Telecom Network Security Engineer will design, implement, and manage security solutions for Airtel Rwanda’s extensive mobile and fixed‑line network. Reporting to the Head of Network Security, you will lead efforts to protect the network against cyber threats, ensure compliance with Rwanda’s ICT regulations, and support the rollout of secure 5G services. This role involves close collaboration with network operations, IT, and product teams to embed security controls throughout the service lifecycle. You will conduct risk assessments, develop incident response plans, and provide technical guidance to mitigate vulnerabilities. Key Responsibilities
- Design and implement firewall, VPN, and intrusion detection/prevention systems across the carrier network.
- Conduct regular security assessments, penetration testing, and vulnerability scans to identify and remediate risks.
- Develop and maintain security policies, standards, and procedures aligned with national ICT regulations and industry frameworks such as ISO 27001.
- Lead incident response activities, including detection, containment, eradication, and post‑incident analysis.
- Collaborate with network operations to integrate security controls into network upgrades, 5G deployments, and IoT platforms.
- Provide technical guidance and training to cross‑functional teams on secure configuration and best practices.
- Monitor security alerts, analyze logs, and generate actionable reports for senior management.
- Maintain documentation of security architectures, configurations, and change management records.
Required Skills
- Strong knowledge of telecom protocols (SS7, LTE, 5G) and network equipment (routers, switches, base stations).
- Hands‑on experience with firewalls (e.g., Palo Alto, Fortinet), IDS/IPS, SIEM tools, and VPN technologies.
- Proficiency in scripting languages such as Python or Bash for automation of security tasks.
- Understanding of cryptographic concepts, PKI, and secure key management.
- Excellent analytical and problem‑solving abilities with a proactive security mindset.
- Effective communication skills to convey technical concepts to non‑technical stakeholders.
- Relevant certifications (CISSP, CCNP Security, CEH) are highly desirable.
Education
A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Security, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline is required. Advanced degrees or specialized certifications will be considered an advantage.
Experience
At least five years of professional experience in telecom network security, including hands‑on implementation of security solutions in carrier environments. Experience with 4G/5G network security, regulatory compliance, and incident response is essential.
Salary
The competitive salary range for this role is 800,000 – 1,200,000 SSP per month, commensurate with experience and qualifications. Performance‑based bonuses and benefits are part of the total compensation package.
