Job Overview

The Sustainable Packaging Engineer will lead the design, development, and implementation of eco‑friendly packaging solutions for Unilever’s portfolio of food, home, and personal care products. Reporting to the Head of R&D, the role focuses on reducing material usage, increasing recyclability, and integrating renewable resources while maintaining product safety and consumer appeal. The engineer will work cross‑functionally with marketing, supply chain, and manufacturing teams to ensure that packaging innovations align with brand objectives and regulatory requirements. Key Responsibilities

• Develop and prototype sustainable packaging concepts using biodegradable, compostable, or recycled materials.
• Conduct life‑cycle assessments (LCA) to quantify environmental impact and identify improvement opportunities.
• Collaborate with suppliers to source high‑performance, low‑carbon materials that meet Unilever’s quality standards.
• Lead feasibility studies, cost‑benefit analyses, and pilot trials to validate new packaging designs.
• Ensure compliance with local and international packaging regulations, including Rwanda’s waste management policies.
• Provide technical guidance to manufacturing teams for scale‑up and production line integration.
• Track performance metrics and report progress on sustainability targets to senior leadership.

Required Skills

• Strong knowledge of material science, especially polymers, paper, and bio‑based alternatives.
• Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD) and packaging simulation tools.
• Excellent analytical skills with experience in LCA and environmental impact modeling.
• Project management capabilities, including timeline and stakeholder coordination.
• Effective communication skills for presenting technical concepts to non‑technical audiences.
• Problem‑solving mindset with a focus on innovative, cost‑effective solutions.

Education

A Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or a closely related discipline is required. A Master’s degree or professional certifications in Sustainable Design or Circular Economy are highly desirable and will be considered an advantage during the selection process.

Experience

The ideal candidate will have 3‑5 years of hands‑on experience in packaging engineering, preferably within the consumer goods sector. Demonstrated experience in developing sustainable packaging, conducting LCAs, and managing supplier relationships is essential. Salary
