Job Overview
We are seeking a highly skilled Satellite Communications Network Engineer to join our growing team in Bugesera. This role is central to the deployment, maintenance, and optimization of our low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellite network infrastructure in Rwanda and the surrounding region. You will be responsible for ensuring network reliability, performance, and scalability, working directly with satellite ground stations, user terminals, and network management systems. Key Responsibilities
- Design, configure, and optimize satellite network links for maximum performance and reliability across Rwanda.
- Monitor network health, analyze performance data, and troubleshoot complex issues related to satellite communications and ground station equipment.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to plan and execute network expansion projects, including new ground station deployments.
- Develop and maintain technical documentation, including network diagrams, configuration guides, and operational procedures.
- Provide advanced technical support for network incidents, performing root cause analysis and implementing corrective actions.
- Test and validate new satellite hardware and software updates in a live network environment.
- Coordinate with regulatory bodies in Rwanda to ensure compliance with local telecommunications and spectrum regulations.
- Train and mentor junior engineers and technicians on satellite network operations and best practices.
- Implement network security protocols to protect satellite communication infrastructure from cyber threats.
- Analyze traffic patterns and network capacity to forecast growth and plan for scalable infrastructure upgrades.
Required Skills
- Expert knowledge of satellite communication systems, including modulation, coding, and multiple access techniques.
- Proficiency in RF engineering principles, link budget analysis, and spectrum management.
- Strong experience with network protocols (TCP/IP, BGP, MPLS) and network management tools.
- Ability to script in Python, Bash, or similar languages for network automation and data analysis.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work under pressure in a 24/7 operational environment.
- Deep understanding of telecommunications infrastructure and experience with ground station equipment.
- Strong project management skills with the ability to lead technical projects from conception to completion.
- Effective communication skills for collaborating with international teams and presenting technical information.
- Knowledge of cybersecurity best practices for critical network infrastructure.
- Adaptability and a continuous learning mindset to keep pace with rapid technological advancements in satellite communications.
Education
A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a closely related technical field is required. Advanced certifications in network engineering (e.g., CCNA, CCNP) or satellite communications are highly desirable. Candidates must demonstrate a strong academic foundation in digital communications, signal processing, and network theory.
Experience
A minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience in satellite communications, network engineering, or a related field is essential. Proven experience with satellite ground segment operations, RF testing, and network performance optimization is required. Prior work in a telecommunications service provider, aerospace company, or similar high-tech environment is a significant advantage. Experience working in Rwanda or the East African region is beneficial but not mandatory.
