Job Overview
The Chemical Process Safety Engineer will lead the design, implementation, and monitoring of safety protocols for all chemical production processes at BASF Rwanda. The role involves risk assessment, hazard analysis, and ensuring compliance with local and international safety standards. The engineer will work closely with production, R&D, and maintenance teams to embed safety into every stage of the process lifecycle. Key Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive Process Hazard Analyses (PHA) and Layer‑of‑Protection Analyses (LOPA) for existing and new chemical processes.
- Develop and maintain safety data sheets, standard operating procedures, and emergency response plans.
- Collaborate with engineering and production teams to integrate safety controls into process design and modifications.
- Lead incident investigations, root‑cause analysis, and corrective action implementation.
- Ensure compliance with Rwanda’s National Occupational Safety and Health regulations and BASF Group standards.
- Provide safety training and mentorship to plant personnel and contractors.
- Monitor key safety performance indicators and prepare regular safety performance reports for senior management.
- Participate in internal and external audits, facilitating continuous improvement initiatives.
Required Skills
- Strong knowledge of chemical process safety principles, including HAZOP, FMEA, and risk‑based inspection.
- Proficiency in safety management systems such as ISO 45001 and OSHA standards.
- Excellent analytical and problem‑solving abilities with a data‑driven mindset.
- Effective communication skills for delivering training and presenting findings to diverse audiences.
- Ability to work collaboratively across multidisciplinary teams and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Fluency in English; knowledge of Kinyarwanda is an advantage.
Education
A Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering, or a closely related discipline is required. Advanced certifications such as Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or NEBOSH are highly desirable and will be considered an asset during the selection process.
Experience
Applicants should have 3‑5 years of hands‑on experience in chemical process safety, preferably within a manufacturing environment. Experience with large‑scale chemical plants, petrochemical operations, or industrial chemicals will be viewed favorably.
Salary
The compensation package ranges from SSP 1,500,000 to SSP 2,500,000 per month, commensurate with experience and qualifications. The package includes performance‑based bonuses, health insurance, and a pension scheme.
