Job Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Aquaculture Production Systems Manager to oversee and optimize our aquaculture production operations in Kibungo, Rwanda. This pivotal role involves managing all aspects of fish production systems, ensuring optimal health, growth, and yield of aquatic stock, while implementing best practices in sustainable aquaculture. The successful candidate will be responsible for the technical management of production cycles, water quality systems, feeding protocols, and biosecurity measures. This position is critical for scaling production, improving operational efficiency, and ensuring the highest standards of animal welfare and environmental compliance. Key Responsibilities

  • Manage the daily operations of aquaculture production systems, including pond, tank, or recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) management.
  • Develop and implement production plans, stocking schedules, and harvest strategies to meet production targets and financial objectives.
  • Monitor and maintain optimal water quality parameters (dissolved oxygen, pH, temperature, ammonia, nitrites) through regular testing and system adjustments.
  • Oversee feeding regimes, ensuring precise feed management to optimize feed conversion ratios (FCR) and minimize waste.
  • Implement and enforce strict biosecurity and health management protocols to prevent and control disease outbreaks.
  • Lead, train, and supervise a team of aquaculture technicians and farm workers, fostering a safe and productive work environment.
  • Manage broodstock, hatchery, and nursery operations to ensure a consistent supply of high-quality juvenile fish.
  • Maintain accurate production records, data logs, and reports on stock performance, mortality, feed usage, and production costs.
  • Collaborate with nutritionists and veterinarians to develop and refine health and nutrition programs.
  • Ensure all operations comply with national environmental regulations, animal welfare standards, and company sustainability policies.
  • Identify and implement innovations and technologies to improve production efficiency, sustainability, and system resilience.
  • Manage operational budgets, procure supplies, and oversee maintenance of all farm infrastructure and equipment.

Required Skills

  • In-depth technical knowledge of aquaculture production systems, water chemistry, and fish biology.
  • Strong practical skills in farm management, including feeding, health monitoring, and harvest techniques.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities for troubleshooting production issues.
  • Proficiency in data collection, analysis, and using farm management software.
  • Proven leadership and team management skills with the ability to motivate and develop staff.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills for liaising with teams, management, and external partners.
  • Solid understanding of biosecurity principles and aquatic animal health management.
  • Budget management and operational planning capabilities.
  • Commitment to safety, sustainability, and animal welfare practices.

Education

A Bachelor’s degree in Aquaculture, Fisheries Science, Marine Biology, Aquatic Veterinary Science, Animal Science, or a closely related field is required. A Master’s degree in Aquaculture Management or Sustainable Aquaculture is a significant advantage. Additional certifications in aquaculture production, water quality management, or project management are highly desirable.

Experience

A minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience in commercial aquaculture production or farm management is essential. Candidates must have proven experience managing aquaculture systems (e.g., ponds, cages, RAS), with a track record of meeting production targets and improving operational efficiency. Experience in species relevant to the Rwandan or East African context (e.g., tilapia, catfish) is preferred. Prior experience in team leadership, budget management, and implementing biosecurity protocols is required. Experience working in an international agribusiness or aquaculture company is a plus.
