Job Overview

The Industrial Robotics Engineer will lead the design, integration, and optimization of robotic cells and automated production lines for ABB’s key manufacturing clients in Rwanda and the East African region. Reporting to the Head of Automation, the engineer will collaborate with cross‑functional teams, including mechanical designers, software developers, and client engineers, to deliver end‑to‑end robotic solutions that meet stringent performance, safety, and cost criteria. Key Responsibilities

  • Design and develop robotic workcells, including selection of robots, end‑effectors, and peripheral equipment.
  • Program and commission industrial robots using ABB’s RAPID language and integrate them with PLC and SCADA systems.
  • Conduct feasibility studies, risk assessments, and cost‑benefit analyses for automation projects.
  • Collaborate with clients to define functional specifications, performance metrics, and safety requirements.
  • Perform on‑site installation, testing, debugging, and commissioning of robotic systems.
  • Develop and maintain detailed engineering documentation, including schematics, wiring diagrams, and user manuals.
  • Provide technical support and training to client personnel during and after project hand‑over.
  • Stay current with emerging robotics technologies, AI integration, and industry standards to propose innovative solutions.

Required Skills

  • Proficiency in robot programming (ABB RAPID) and integration with PLCs (Siemens, Allen‑Bradley).
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical design, kinematics, and control systems.
  • Experience with CAD/CAM tools such as SolidWorks or CATIA.
  • Excellent problem‑solving abilities and analytical thinking.
  • Effective communication skills for client interaction and multidisciplinary teamwork.
  • Familiarity with safety standards (ISO 10218, IEC 61508) and risk assessment methodologies.
  • Ability to travel to client sites across Rwanda and occasionally to neighboring countries.

Education

A Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Robotics, Mechatronics, or a closely related field is required. A Master’s degree or professional certifications (e.g., ABB Certified Robotics Engineer) are advantageous and may influence salary placement.

Experience

Minimum of five years of hands‑on experience in industrial robotics engineering, preferably within manufacturing or automation projects. Demonstrated track record of delivering complete robotic solutions from concept to commissioning is essential.

Salary
