Job Overview

Alight Rwanda is seeking a qualified and compassionate Clinical Psychologist to provide high-quality mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) services to refugees and host communities across Rwanda. Job Description

The Clinical Psychologist will provide direct psychosocial services while strengthening mental health systems through training, community engagement, referrals, and stakeholder collaboration. The position requires expertise in clinical psychology, counseling, trauma recovery, emotional wellness, psychosocial care, humanitarian aid, and community mental health programming.

Key Responsibilities

Direct Service Delivery

  • Organize and facilitate group therapy sessions tailored to age-specific and community-specific needs.
  • Provide individual psychosocial counseling for beneficiaries facing trauma, mental health, emotional distress, and psychosocial challenges.
  • Deliver trauma-informed care for vulnerable individuals, including refugees, GBV survivors, persons with disabilities, and marginalized populations.
  • Develop and distribute psychosocial educational materials such as mental health flyers, wellness resources, and counseling booklets.

Capacity Building & Training

  • Train community activists, teachers, and healthcare workers on Psychological First Aid (PFA) and psychosocial support methods.
  • Conduct workshops on stress management, grief counseling, emotional resilience, trauma recovery, and mental health awareness.
  • Facilitate continuous mentoring, coaching, and experience-sharing sessions for trained community actors.

Community Engagement & Psychosocial Programs

  • Collaborate with community leaders, religious leaders, educators, and local stakeholders to integrate mental health awareness into community activities.
  • Design and implement stigma reduction programs, including art therapy, psychosocial workshops, school interventions, and community dialogue sessions.
  • Support anti-GBV clubs, youth empowerment initiatives, economic empowerment activities, and psychosocial awareness campaigns.

Collaboration & Coordination

  • Work closely with GBV Prevention Officers, Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) Nurses, social workers, and protection teams to deliver integrated care.
  • Coordinate with government agencies, NGOs, local organizations, and mental health specialists to strengthen referral systems and service delivery.
  • Maintain accurate case documentation, referrals, follow-up reports, and beneficiary records.

Monitoring, Evaluation & Reporting

  • Support the MEAL Team (Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability & Learning) in collecting psychosocial program data and evaluating outcomes.
  • Conduct client satisfaction assessments to improve counseling and mental health services.
  • Submit regular reports detailing achievements, service impact, challenges, and recommendations.

Education Requirements

Applicants must possess:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology, Social Work, Mental Health, Counseling, Behavioral Science, or a related field.
  • A Master’s Degree or professional certification in Trauma Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Mental Health, Psychosocial Support, or Counseling Psychology is an added advantage.

Experience Requirements

  • Minimum 3 years of professional experience in psychosocial support, counseling, trauma recovery, or humanitarian healthcare settings.
  • Proven experience delivering group therapy, counseling sessions, trauma-informed interventions, and psychosocial support services.
  • Demonstrated success in training community service providers and conducting psychosocial workshops.

Skills & Competencies

The ideal candidate should demonstrate:

  • Strong understanding of Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) principles.
  • Knowledge of Psychological First Aid (PFA) and Gender-Based Violence (GBV) response mechanisms.
  • Excellent communication, empathy, and interpersonal counseling skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality, ethics, and professional boundaries.
  • Strong organizational and case management skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with refugees, host communities, vulnerable populations, and multicultural environments.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and documentation tools.

Language Requirements

  • Fluency in English and Kinyarwanda.
  • Knowledge of French or other local languages will be an added advantage.
